Its only round 2

April 4th 2008 04:22
Itís only the start of round 3 tonight, but we can already make a few predictions, or can we? The predictions can be that Geelong will win the premiership again, Hawthorn will be a contender with St Kilda, Melbourne will lose every game for the season, Carlton wonít be any good again and Richmond will beat some sides and loose most. However everyone just calm down. Itís only round 2 and everyone can still make the finals.
Think back to 2004. Geelong had been flogged in its opening two rounds and the media wanted to rip the joint down. Well they ended up playing in the preliminary final and were unlucky to be beaten by Brisbane by a mere 9 points. Compare that with 2006 and Geelong won its first 2 games by over 10 goals each and were premiership favourites and didnít make the 8.

While Melbourne is in a fair bit of trouble at the moment, they head down to Skilled Stadium this week. It will take a brave Melbourne supporter to go down the highway to watch the Dees this week however Melbourne has nothing to lose. They are out to $34 just for the win with some betting agencies and everyone expects them to get one of the biggest defeats in AFL history. They may just decide to play their own game and not worry about pride and just play footy. If Melbourne can somehow pull off an amazing victory then they will grow so much confidence and who knows what they will do with some confidence. They could do what Geelong did last year after beating Richmond.
While Geelong are the ones to beat at this stage of the season, Hawthorn are looking just as bit dangerous and you would think on their day with Buddy Franklin firing they could surely beat anyone. They seem to not play on their players but rather play with a whole ground zone and this could be interesting to watch for as the season progresses.

Last week Carlton was defeated by St Kilda by 40 points, however their first quarter was impressive. Marc Murphy looks like he will become a genuine star of the competition and was inspirational in the first quarter. Their midfield is quick and young. If Chris Judd can get his body right for the end of the season they may just make a late run for the eight.
St Kilda is an interesting team. Lots of people are backing them, however on what grounds? Potential? Sure they have got a good list with the big guys up forward, however their forward line become clattered when Kosi, Riewoldt and Gehrig all play up there together. Their midfield is full of class but donít have the dash like other teams have. Last week against Carlton their disposal was poor at times. Iím definitely not convinced with them just yet
Itís only round 2 and everyone is already making decisions, but letís just wait until about round 6 or 7 and then we will really know who the contenders are and who the pretenders are.

What is happening with Judd at Carlton -- is he still injured? They will not be happy if he does not perform up to expectations for the rest of the season.

Chris Judd went to Carlton with the same groin roblems that he had with West Coast and will never return to the great football htat he played. He is at Carlton to lead the team and show his authority, knowledge and proffesionalism of the game. Chris Judd is only playing at about 75% fitness at the moment. Lets just hope he doesn't get run down at the end of the season like he did at the end of last season
