Bright Future for the Blues

Last night Essendon overcame a resurgent Carlton to win the shootout at the MCG by 17 points. In what was the highest scoring match ever played between the two proud clubs, there was excitement all over the ground and both teams will take plenty of positives out of the match. It was a seesawing affair from the outset and was truly entertaining.
Both teams looked as if they were going to break the game open but as soon as one side looked as if it would get on top and run away with the game, the other team found something extra and got themselves back into the game.
While Essendon were ahead at half time Carlton looked the better side. Chris Judd was back to his best in the first half and Damien Pevril had a hard time trying to curb his influence. Stevens was super in the midfield for Carlton and answered his critics in emphatic style with two goals in the second quarter within a minute. Eddie Betts played the game of his life and was quick and dangerous all game.
Mark McVeigh was inspirational for Essendon and was moved onto Judd in the third quarter and really curbed his influence. But the third quarter was Carlton’s. They were very slick and one young man named Kreuza was superb. What a player he is going to be. Hopefully Carlton won’t burn him out like Collingwood did with Josh Fraser. Fevola was simply awesome and kicked five goals for the term, prompting Knights to move Paddy Ryder onto him. Carlton looked like they were going to run away with the game, and then stepped up Andrew Lovett the excitement machine. He took the game on with his speed and a couple of goals, plus a captain’s goal from Lloyd and McPhee after the siren to make the difference in favour of Carlton at the three quarter time break.
Essendon then went on with it in the last quarter. Unfortunately for the blues they have now equalled their record losing margin of 14 matches in a row from 1901 and it seems hard to believe that they will get a win next week against a very strong Collingwood outfit. Poor Brett Ratten still hasn’t tasted victory in his 9 matches as coach of Carlton. But there are many good signs there for both Carlton and Essendon and they are both up and coming teams that will prosper well in finals series in the next couple of years.
